How EMDR Therapy Can Help You Heal Your Trauma

Are you considering enlisting the help of professional therapy? Perhaps, you are experiencing issues related to trauma and distress. And if so, you will want to focus on finding a resolution and healing. EDMR Therapy could be the solution to your problems. With the right counselor, you could be on your way to rebuilding your life.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for “Eye Movement, Desensitization, and Reprocessing.” The therapy focuses highly on the scientific methods of bilateral stimulation of the brain. Sessions can involve finger movement for eye stimulation, headphones, or vibrating pieces in the hands.

It may seem funny and as if the practices are not of much use. However, this targets the part of the brain that stores trauma; the mid brain. Trauma is stored in the mid brain during moments of “Fight, Flight, or Freeze” as an instinctive reminder that similar situations are dangerous. Your brain isn’t trying to hurt you, it’s attempting to protect you. However, when the trauma begins to negatively affect you, you need to target the midbrain in healing with EMDR Therapy.

The mid brain is the portion of the brain that you want to target since it can often overpower your logical and rational thoughts that are held in your prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that thinks situations through, but often fails when you’re having a panic attack or anxiety since it does not acknowledge the trauma. So EMDR targets the midbrain for effective results.

How was EMDR Developed?

Psychologist Dr. Shaprio made the observation that eye movements had the ability to reduce the intensity of disturbing thoughts, upon certain circumstances. This observation occurred in 1987 and was reported to be a success by 1989 when she successfully treated victims of trauma using EMDR. Now, her work has been expanded upon by other research and continues to demonstrate a long line of success. Thus, know that EMDR has a history of incredible success and you could be a part of this legacy.
