Panic Attack Treatment

We’ve all heard the phrase “don’t panic” but did you know that many people suffer from panic disorder and are unable to control when panic attacks occur?

A panic attack is frightening but fortunately harmless.  They occur randomly.  They reach their intensity and go away usually on their own. During an attack, the individual experiences an uncomfortable and “fight or flight” feeling of entrapment or loss of control.

Panic attacks can also cause a feeling of impending death or suffocation as well as physical symptoms including chest pain, palpitations, rapid heartbeat, sweating, nausea, dizziness, and rapid breathing. Sometimes there’s a feeling of “going crazy.”  Many people experience panic attacks once during their lifetime, but people who repeatedly experience them may have a panic disorder and depression along with other anxiety-based illnesses. Panic attacks occur suddenly without warning and if left untreated can lead to irrational fears (phobias).

If you or a loved one is suffering repeatedly from panic attacks, you would benefit from professional help. Often the symptoms reduce with EMDR Therapy.

Addressing anxiety is important in treating panic attacks and depression.  Learning about emotional issues that may trigger symptoms can help the patient avoid an attack altogether.
